Bagel Bliss & Pizza Heaven – NYC Day 2

The 20 Mile Day : Having visited so many monumental  places on day one, it was hard to imagine a day more spectacular. Day two, also known as “the 20 mile day”, was completely unplanned. My mother and I decided to start in the middle and walk our way out. We started at Bryant Park! When we arrived, I immediately thought, “This is what I pictured when I thought of New York City.” Bryant Park was a vision – a beautifully kept park surrounded by architectural history. Since it was early in the work day, we were lucky to enjoy the park all to ourselves…just us, the pigeons and the flowers. From Bryant Park to Bagel Heaven! I had my heart set on the legendary Ess A Bagel – a toasted, everything bagel with cream cheese & a small, black coffee. Truthfully, most of the cream cheese squeezed out with each bite of the perfectly crunchy and chewy treat, but every morsel was unforgettable! From Bryant Park and Bagel Bliss, we continued our loop of Midtown to the picturesque Grand Central Station. This …

Bake with Me – Povitica

Tis the season for good, old-fashioned, homemade, comfort food! This is an authentic Croatian recipe from my husband’s family and, in my opinion, WAY better than the Strawberry Hill Brand sold at Costco. The seasonal tradition is to make “Povi” from scratch, like Grandma Skradski used to. To say Povi is a comfort food for my in-laws would be an understatement. This desert bread (also referred to as Nut Roll) brings about heart-warming memories of holidays with loved ones dearly missed. Fun Fact: This Christmas, my husband’s aunt told us a traditional way Croatians served Povi was at breakfast with a slice of ham on top! YUMO This is a challenging recipe but very rewarding if you are willing to put in the work! The intense parts are Step 1 and 3, but the entire recipe uses common household ingredients. Step 1: Make Croatian Bread 1c Sugar 1c Warm Milk ½c Warm Water 1 Package Yeast 2 tsp salt 4 Egg Yolks 1 Stick of Butter 7-10c Flour (best if used while you work vs. measuring) Put sugar, warm …

Cooker’s Block

My father may be almost as disappointed as my husband’s tummy when he reads this; seeing as how my spirit for culinary creativity, no doubt, came from him. My sweet mama mimics her mother in the ways of tireless hosting, but her recipe repertoire consists of Fried Macaroni (family favorite), Tuna Casserole and BLTs – not exactly Wolfgang Puck. Love you Mom!   Like some kind of kitchen Macgyver, I try finding ways to make something out of nothing, but lately, I seem to have lost that element of inventiveness. Somehow, I went from cooking multiple-nights a week to not knowing where to start. My poor husband was so excited to be marrying a lady who could expand his diet, consisting primarily of PB&J, and I have seriously dropped the ball! Ironically, my favorite foods also require little to no prep (frozen yogurt, popcorn & cereal). Are we just cheap and being lazy?! For example, tonight I opted for a peach and homemade popcorn for dinner while my other-half microwaved turkey sausages…this is unacceptable!!! I thought a fun …
